You & Me and "Getting Old"

aging well brain health caregiving tips Oct 08, 2024

When you think about aging, what comes to mind—positive or negative thoughts?

We hope it leans toward the positive, and here’s why:

Research shows that how we perceive aging significantly impacts our mental and physical healthin a BIG way!

One of the most intriguing studies we discovered was conducted by Yale.

The study looked at participants aged 50 and older.

It revealed that those with negative beliefs about aging exhibited unwanted brain changesincluding the buildup of amyloid plaques and tangles, which are key signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

So, if you find yourself thinking or saying things like, “I’m getting OLD… I’ll never make it through this… or it’s all downhill from here…” be aware:

This mindset will put you at risk and weaken your body.

Now, in the spirit of positivitylet's talk about the good news!

The same study found that people who held more positive views about aging lived, on average, 7.5 years longer than those with negative perceptions.

We believe that's a compelling reason for a mindset shift!

And if you're still not convinced, consider doing it for the older adult in your life.

If you’re overseeing their healthcare, you may be unintentionally reinforcing the negative feelings or perceptions of aging through your words and actions.

By being mindful of what you say and how you interact, you can boost their well-being and ease their stress.

As Wayne Dyer wisely said, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

This becomes especially important during significant transitions, like moving your loved one to assisted living or memory care.

Your words and actions influence your loved one's perception of themselves and the move.

So, if you’re considering senior living for your loved one, or have questions about your current assisted living experience, now’s your chance!
